Ecuador Volcanoes Expedition

Another successful trip in the books for the Colorado Mountain School. For this expedition, IFMGA guide Dale Remsberg lead the team to the summit of several volcanoes.

After a fairly long flight to Quito, Ecuador, Dale and the two clients, Jim and David, meet up with our in country logistical service and made their way to the hotel for some much need rest. They started off the trip with some acclimatization hikes. They first hiked around Cuicocha Lake (10,052’) in Otavalo and then Rucu Pinchincha (15,413’). From there they made their way to the Cayambe Hut. To prepare them for what lied ahead, Dale worked with the clients on brushing up their glacier travel skills. Dale, David, and Joshua made a fast trip to the summit (18,997’), making a roundtrip time of 6.5 hours. After Cayambe the team went back to Quito for some rest and relaxation. They then traveled to Tambopaxi, a quiet hostel located at the lower flanks of their next objective, Cotopaxi (19,347’). After an acclimatization hike the team prepared themselves for the next day’s summit attempt. With an alpine start the whole team made it to the summit. With everyone smiling and the sun shining on their face, they took some beautiful photos and headed back down. They then traveled to a beautiful hotel nearby for a celebratory dinner and great nights rest. They took their time getting back to Quito and flew out a couple days later.

I couldn’t be more pleased for the team. I think Jim summed the trip up nicely in one sentence:

“With you (E.J.), Dale, Joshua, and David B. leading the way, I reached a goal that seemed unreachable.”

It is an incredible feeling knowing that you helped someone reach one of their goals.
